Everyday Tech Answers

Short, honest answers to the questions readers send most often. If yours is missing, tell us.

Will turning on Developer options harm my Android phone or void the warranty?

No. Enabling the menu does not harm the phone or void a warranty. Some options inside it can cause instability, so change only what a guide names and switch the menu off afterwards. See animation speed.

Why does my Settings menu not match the steps?

Manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi and OnePlus rename and move items, and Apple reorganises menus between iOS releases. Use the search bar at the top of Settings and type the feature name.

How do I find my Android or iOS version?

On Android: Settings > About phone > Android version. On iPhone: Settings > General > About, then iOS Version.

Does my iPhone support Back Tap?

Back Tap works on iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or later. Find it under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. Setup steps.

Can I undo a privacy change if an app stops working?

Yes. Return to the same permission screen or the app's own settings page and allow access again.

Do keyboard shortcuts work the same in every browser?

The most common ones, such as reopening a closed tab and focusing the address bar, work in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. On a Mac, Cmd usually replaces Ctrl. Full list.

Will denying permissions break my apps?

Only the features that need that permission stop working. A map app without location still opens but cannot show where you are.

Are these really hidden features?

They are documented settings that many people overlook. We focus on what each one does for you rather than calling it a secret.

Is it safe to install apps that promise to unlock hidden features?

Be cautious. Stick to Google Play, the Galaxy Store or the App Store, read the permissions requested, and avoid apps asking for accessibility or device administrator access without a clear reason.

How can I suggest a trick for the site?

Use the contact workspace to draft your suggestion, then copy it or save it as a text file and email it to [email protected].
